The Way of Transformation: Character Analysis and Movement Psychology

Find the multitude of characters and attitudes that exist within you.

Joaquin Phoenix, Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron the list of actors who have transformed in from of our very eyes to inhabit the body and psychology of the character they play often grabs the culture (and awards circuit) by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t let us go. Often these actors are accused of ‘going method’ with full immersion into their roles to achieve these dazzling heights. However, it is their shared commitment to a unity of inner and outer character attitudes either consciously or unconsciously speaks to us an art.

Yat Malmgren was a once in a generation artist who taught and inspired some of the greatest actors of the modern age with his powerful insight into human expression. Combining Jungian typology with Stanislavsky’s acting pedagogy he was able to bring Rudolf Laban’s life’s work to completion through what he called ‘character analysis’.

Taught across a year through a series of workshops and lectures, this work puts the actor squarely in their body and spirit and challenges them to find the multitude of characters and attitudes that already exist inside of them. Performed solo through a series of improvisations, this work is a must for anyone looking to deepen their connection between their inner lives and outer actions on stage or screen.

“Harry Haynes has an exceptionally profound grasp of Yat Malmgren’s work, Character Analysis. This was confirmed in the excellent characters created from this work at the Drama Centre, London. His understanding spans the subjective experience of creating character and a clear intellectual grasp of the work. This makes communicating the complex aspects of the work in a straightforward and comprehensible fashion possible. Harry is rare bird in having these two aspects combined. In my 10 years at the Drama Centre as the principal teacher of Character Analysis, Harry stands out as one of very few actors to have grasped this work to such a level. His enthusiasm for the work and his natural inclination to share his knowledge and experience make for a natural teacher.”
